A Study on Biologically Inspired Models of Computation

In April 2003, it is announced that DNA sequence analysis of the human genome has been completed, which marks exactly a half century’s anniversary since the Nobel prize was awarded to Watson and Crick for their theory of DNA double strands in 1953. Bioscience nowadays has been attracting considerable attention, and a lot of research efforts have been made to analyze molecular information such as base sequences. On the other hand, in computer science, we often use the terminology “bio-computing”, which implies that the relations of this field with bioscience have been developed. Bio-computing is a computing for analyzing biology, in other words, a mathematical analysis of biological properties by using computer. In the reverse direction, “bio-computing” indicates an analysis of new computations inspired by a biological approach. We refer to “molecular computing” and “DNA computing” as computing by using the properties of macromolecules and DNA molecules, respectively. Adleman was the first who made wet lab experiments using DNAmolecules and gave a solution for Hamiltonian Path Problem (HPP, for short) concerning with a directed graph in 1994 [1], which has initiated and accelerated further developments in DNA computing.
